Walmart breaks ground on $65 million Bayamón supercenter on land it bought in 2014
Walmart broke ground on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, on a $65 million supercenter at the intersection of PR-167 and PR-828 in barrio Buena Vista, Bayamón, joined by the governor and the mayor of Bayamón, elnuevodia.com reported. The store is expected to open in the second quarter of 2028 with 600 employees, and it will be the company's second store in the city.
The store will cover about 170,000 square feet, create more than 265 jobs during construction and be the first Walmart Supercenter in Bayamón and the company's 19th store in Puerto Rico, theweeklyjournal.com reported.
The lot sits between Avenida Los Palacios (PR-828) and the Desvío Mariano Cotto (PR-5), primerahora.com reported, and the store is expected to open in about 18 months with 550 to 600 permanent jobs. It will have grocery, home, garden, electronics, clothing, toy, pet, sporting goods and furniture departments, a pharmacy, an optician, financial services, a café and pickup and delivery, and the company plans high-efficiency refrigeration and air conditioning and LED lighting and is considering solar panels, according to wjournalpr.com. wapa.tv and sincomillas.com also reported the groundbreaking.
Land bought in 2014
Walmart Puerto Rico bought the 41,589 m2 site in Buena Vista on August 1, 2014, according to RED Atlas property records. The deed in those records carries no price; El Nuevo Día, citing public documents, put the purchase at $4.3 million.
The adjacent property the outlet said came from the municipality is a 5,045 m2 lot on Carretera 167 that Walmart bought from the Municipality of Bayamón for $253,000 on August 25, 2025. Permit filings for a second access to the store sit on that lot.
The store's permits, filed in 2023 under an earlier project name, reached a consolidated construction permit, approved on September 29, 2026, a week before the ceremony.
Selectos, traffic and taxes
In 2014 the owners of Supermercado Selectos, less than a minute from the site, questioned a permit for a supercenter in an area with several supermarkets, El Nuevo Día reported. Selectos declined to comment this time. The mayor said a large store brings traffic that spills over to smaller businesses nearby.
The mayor said construction excise taxes will bring Bayamón $1.1 million, and that road improvements are planned in two phases, the first possibly ready by 2028. The Walmart at Plaza del Sol and the Sam's Club next to it generate $4 million a year in municipal license fees and sales tax, he said.
Bayamón's commercial market
Bayamón had 86 commercial properties listed for sale and 64 listed for lease on October 13, 2026, according to the Bayamón market profile. Sellers asked a median of $192.84 per square foot in September 2026, a figure drawn from few listings. The registry recorded 13 commercial sales in the city in October 2025, the latest month of its series. For homes, the median asking price in Bayamón was $252,980 in September 2026.
