Vieques pier deal aims for a 7.6-nautical-mile route to Ceiba
Puerto Rico's governor announced on November 6, 2026 an agreement between the municipality of Vieques and the Integrated Transport Authority to move ahead with improvements to the Mosquito Pier, part of an effort to open a shorter sea route between Ceiba and the island, NotiCel reported. On the same visit she opened the rehabilitated Monte Santo Resilient Community Center, renovated with a $358,532 investment from the Office for Socioeconomic and Community Development.
A shorter crossing
The proposed route would cut the sailing distance from about 11 to 7.6 nautical miles, a reduction of close to 31% and an estimated 15 minutes per trip, the outlet reported from figures released by the governor's office. The government also projects saving about $1.07 million a year in fuel.
Under the agreement the authority will carry out rehabilitation work and improvements at the pier, while the municipality keeps ownership of the property. The project covers the waiting areas, the ticket office, boarding and landing, and the access for passengers, vehicles and cargo. The outlet reported that the design is 90% complete and awaits approval from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
