Legislator presses to end La Puntilla pumps in Arecibo after $18.7M
The representative for House District 14 has demanded safety improvements and a clear timeline to remove a provisional wastewater pumping system in the La Puntilla sector of Arecibo's urban center, Metro Puerto Rico reported on October 10, 2026. The system has been in place for nine years, and the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority has reported disbursements of $18.7 million against an initial estimate of $1 million, the outlet said.
Nine years of temporary pumps
The demand came at a meeting called under House Resolution 668, which brought together the authority, the contractor, the mayor of Arecibo and legislators from the district, the outlet reported. The House North Region Commission led the meeting.
A tour of the facilities found safety conditions that need improvement, among them a perimeter fence. Participants also asked that alleged oil leaks and possible diesel spills be checked and addressed, the outlet said.
A stage of the work due for completion on November 27 would allow the pumps to be turned off temporarily, although they could be turned on again to continue other work, the outlet reported. No date was confirmed for finishing a second project, and the commission plans to follow up in December.
The sewer work on file
Permit filings in the urban district describe a design-build contract to complete the rehabilitation of the La Puntilla 42-inch sanitary trunk sewer. Its environmental pre-consultation was filed on November 28, 2023, and two incidental single permits were filed on January 31, 2024 and December 23, 2024; all three are recorded as approved.
A separate environmental pre-consultation, filed on August 16, 2024 and recorded as approved, covers segment 2 of 9 in the rehabilitation of Arecibo's sanitary trunk sewer.
