Guánica safe room project adds October 26 infrastructure filing
The municipality of Guánica has filed again for its planned community safe room at Carr. PR-331, Km 0.7, Sector Reparto Oasis, Guánica 00653. The newest step is an infrastructure recommendation request filed on October 26, 2026, recorded as incomplete. The project, Safe Room - Municipio de Guánica, describes a one-story building to shelter and support members of the community in emergencies.

Nearly six months of filings
The project opened with a consolidated construction permit filed on May 6, 2026, which is recorded as incomplete. An infrastructure recommendation request filed on May 25, 2026 is recorded as approved, and a second one filed on June 15, 2026 carries no status.
An infrastructure recommendation request asks the permits office whether infrastructure is available for a project, ahead of a construction permit. An approval at that step does not mean work has started, and the construction permit filing has not been approved.
The site
The lot covers 5,519 m2 (59,406 sq ft) in Susúa Baja. The Puerto Rico Land Use Plan classifies it as common rural land, and it lies in flood zone X, outside the areas mapped at high flood risk.
The land already serves the town: an earlier use permit for a covered court, held by the municipality, is on record for the same lot.
Safe rooms across the island
Guánica is one of 13 municipalities where safe room projects have filed with the permits office since 2022, among them Guayanilla, Peñuelas and San Germán. Guayanilla's is a separate project, a safe room for first responders.
