Under the plan, each of the three towns would receive $2 of every general admission ticket and in return maintain PR-129, the green areas and their tourism offices; the sales and use tax (IVU) and development excise taxes generated on the park's land would be split equally among them. Representatives of District 15 said they would soon file the measure in the House, and the Senate president backed it. The secretary of the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources had called the transfer of title from his agency "madness" in an earlier interview with the outlet.
The park's property record
RED Atlas property records list the Parque de las Cavernas del Río Camuy as an 18.9-hectare property, all of it classified as specially protected rural land and zoned for resource conservation, the district for features such as caves that must be kept. Its permit filings list the National Parks Company as owner on a construction permit approved on June 1, 2017 and a use permit approved on January 12, 2018. In 2023 a project filed as the revitalization of the park's "Camuy Deck", "Hatillo Deck" and Cueva Clara received an approved legal pre-consultation and an environmental categorical exclusion on February 7 and an approved archaeology and historic-conservation recommendation on March 12. No later filing on the property appears in the records.
On October 20, 2026, the day the report ran, a buildability pre-consultation was filed under the name "Parque las Cavernas de Camuy" for a 1,056 m2 property on PR-129 at kilometre 19 in Callejones, Lares, about 1.8 km from the center of the park property. It describes in-kind repairs to gazebo areas, parking, access paths and roads damaged by Hurricane María. A pre-consultation is an early step, the record shows no decision on it yet, and a filing does not establish that work started or finished.
Visitor lodging around the park
The three towns have 213 active short-term rental listings in RED Atlas records today: 94 in Hatillo, 72 in Camuy and 47 in Lares, at median advertised nightly rates of $171, $174 and $150. Only one is within 1 km of the park. The rates are what hosts advertise, not bookings or revenue.
