Family Department faces $53,440 eviction suit over Arecibo offices
The owner of the building that houses the Puerto Rico Family Department's Arecibo offices has sued the agency for eviction, seeking $53,440 in allegedly overdue rent, the San Juan Daily Star reported on October 30, 2026.
The agency said in a letter that it owes three months of rent. The owner's attorney told the outlet the debt is larger than that, and the complaint filed in court alleges a balance of more than $53,000.
How the dispute reached court
The two sides met on October 2 to discuss the late payments, the attorney said. Agency officials acknowledged delays, said the July and August payments were being processed, and said the Financial Oversight and Management Board had already released the funds for earlier months.
The owner expected a written agreement after that meeting. It never arrived, no payment had been issued to date, and the owner filed for eviction under the lease, the attorney told the outlet.
A hearing is scheduled for November 17, when both sides are expected to present their positions on the rent and the eviction request.
