AAA files an environmental assessment for a new Río Grande de Añasco water intake that would raise extraction from 20 to 30 MGD
The Autoridad de Acueductos y Alcantarillados de Puerto Rico (AAA) has filed for a final determination of no environmental impact for a new raw water intake on the Río Grande de Añasco, at Carr. PR-430, km 1.8, in Barrio Ovejas, Añasco. The filing, case 2026-677266-DEA-301466, is dated October 12, 2026 and is under inspection.
The authority wrote that the project improves the raw water supply to the filtration plant and that the new intake raises the extraction rate of the existing one from 20 MGD to 30 MGD, with the existing intake abandoned once the project is complete and operating. An environmental recommendation request for the same project was approved on October 6, 2026; an earlier version filed on April 8, 2026 was deleted.
Part of the Miradero raw-water rehabilitation
The intake feeds the Miradero filtration plant in Mayagüez. Two earlier filings by the same authority on a Carretera 430 property in Río Cañas, Añasco, describe the rest of the system. One, approved on May 27, 2025 under the CDBG-DR program (CIP 5-50-6044), covers the Río Añasco raw water pumping station and its electrical substation, the gravity line from the intake and the replacement of two pressure lines to the Miradero plant, and names Añasco, Rincón, Mayagüez, Hormigueros and Cabo Rojo as the municipalities that would benefit. The other, approved on September 12, 2025, adds two new 36-inch forced mains to the plant and a fiber-optic line for telemetry.
No construction permit filing is on record for the intake, which puts the project at an early stage.
